ASSIGNMENT 3.7 ( CHAPTER 3 )

Assume that a focus group of college students was convened to show them an innovative thumb drive memory unit and to ask what characteristic are they wanted it to have. The comments were as follows:

  • It need to have enough memory to meet student needs.
  • It should interface with any computer a student would encounter.
  • It must have a reliability of near 100%.
  • It should have some way to signal that it is working.
Translate this customer requirements into engineering characteristic of the product.

1. Storage capacity :
  • USB 2.0 support can store more data and transfer faster and much larger than     optical disc drive such as CD-RW/ DVD-RW.
  • Provides space to include second memory chip.

2. Interface :
  • Use USB mass storage standard supported natively by modern operating system such as Linux, OSX, Windows and Unix-like system.
  • Use two connectors to make it simple to either plug into laptop with USB or phone with microUSB connector or
  • Use wireless storage makes it easy to connect and share with all of mobile devices and laptop without USB.

3. Reliability :
  •  Non-volatile memory retains data even without being powered on.
  • Provide consistent and reliable performance.

4. Signal :
  • Have LED to indicate data transfer or data reads and writes.
